Increase, decrease, and the trap
Percentage change always divides by the starting value — that single fact explains most mistakes. A rent rise from £1,200 to £1,320 is +10%; a fall back to £1,200 is only −9.1%, because the base changed. What is the percentage change formula?
(New − Old) ÷ Old × 100. Going from 50 to 65: (65 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = +30%.
Why doesn’t a 50% drop then a 50% rise cancel out?
Because each change applies to a different base: 100 → 50 → 75. The rise acts on the smaller number.
